Haiti
Fifty-two years is a long time to wait. Haiti last appeared at a World Cup in 1974, went out in the first round, and then vanished from the game's biggest stage until now. Their return through CONCACAF qualifying has been called the greatest achievement in Caribbean football history, and it is hard to argue otherwise. Sébastien Migné, the French coach, has assembled a squad largely from the diaspora, scouting Ligue 2 and the Belgian Pro League for players eligible to represent the island. Frantzdy Pierrot of Bordeaux carries most of the attacking burden, with the experienced Duckens Nazon offering a steadier head up front. Group C, alongside Brazil, Morocco and Scotland, gives little room to breathe. A result against the Scots would be remembered for years. But for a nation rebuilding amid turmoil, simply being there is the win.
