Egypt

GGroup4Matches2#5PTS

There is a streak hanging over Egypt that no amount of pedigree can hide: six defeats in their last seven World Cup group matches, and not a single escape from the first round in three previous attempts. Sixteen years after their last appearance, in 2018, they return under Hossam Hassan, a former striker turned coach who has built everything around one man. Mohamed Salah, now in his early thirties, remains the focal point of a reactive, disciplined 4-2-3-1 that counters and waits. Trezeguet and Mostafa Mohamed provide the support, while Ahmed Hegazy anchors the back line. Egypt qualified comfortably through CAF on the back of Salah's form. In Group G they meet Belgium, Iran and New Zealand, and the honest target is second place behind the Belgians. Doing so would carry them somewhere no Egyptian side has ever been: out of the group.
